ART FOCUS: Isaac Emokpae

The first of Isaac Emokpae’s artworks I ever came across was The Leopard King. The beautiful piece made from stained glass struck a chord in my heart because it reminded me so much of Edo state, where I am from.

Isaac Emokpae is a Nigerian painter, visual artist and photographer. He studied art at the University of Lagos under the tutelage of Professor Abayomi Barber.

He is the third son of Erhabor Emokpae, a well known Nigerian sculptor and painter considered to be one of the pioneers of modern art in Nigeria. His works are primarily in the style of abstract expressionism.

‘Monad’, exhibited at Rele Gallery

He works with oil paints, acrylic paints, lino cut, vinyl, stained plexiglass, photography and video. He has had several exhibitions over the years with his most recent, ‘Transparent’ at Rele Gallery in Onikan, Lagos in 2017. He won the UNESCO Exchange Our Treasures Art Competition in France in 1996 and was a semi-finalist at the Hasselbald Masters in Sweden in 2008.
